Looking for a country dance instructor Best answer on the web

  • I live in Las Vegas and I want to learn country dancing (the two step). I am looking for a woman who is a dance instructor, or who knows country dancing well enough to instruct who would meet me at Gilleys at the Frontier Casino and coach me on the two step. Gilleys provides free country dance lessons on Thursdays through Sundays, but most of what they teach is line dancing, and I am looking to be come proficient at the two step and all the turns involved. I would be willing to pay $100 an hour for dance lessons. This is strictly a professional proposition for dance lessons, not a relationship.

I owe you an apology. I hope you will accept it. Rather than finding fault with your original answer, I should have worked with you, as you have shown that you were clearly willing to broaden your search, and you have done so. My initial impression (which I now realize was incorrect) was that you simply contacted listed dance schools in the Las Vegas area, and I was expecting a broader search than that. I very much appreciate the additional guidance you have provided. Is it possible for me to go back and change my star designation for your work and add a tip for your efforts?

  • Aliciadenney,

Thank you for the referral to Amore Dance Studios. I called Matthew Decole, the owner and set up a lesson for tomorrow at the studio. We will go to Gilleys after spending some time in the studio.
Your recommendation may work out fine, and hopefully that will be the case. I must admit, however, that as a frequent Google Answers user, I am accustomed to getting a more detailed response for a $200 question. I almost always submit my questions at the $200 response category, because I like being as informed as possible on the topics for which I request research.
I have taken studio ballroom dance lessons for many years, and only recently have started learning country. I am in fact currently taking country dance lessons at the Authur Murray in Las Vegas that you contacted. You indicated that Arthur Murray would charge $150 per hour for lessons "at Gilleys" which eliminated them as a choice because I had asked for lessons at $100 per hour. I'm quite certain that Arthur Murray pays its instructors considerably less than $100 per hour, but when you take studio lessons, you have to cover the cost of running a dance studio, insurance, licensing, business taxes etc. A freelance instructor has none of those issues.
Although it would be a logical first step to call Las Vegas dance studios and ask if they are willing to instruct "on location", I thought that by going to Google Answers for reference, I would receive research that went beyond checking into what local dance studios are willing to offer. It seems that in a city of more than a million there are probably a number of people who are qualified and willing to provide country dance lessons on a freelance basis but my difficulty is finding out how to contact them. Your search has resulted in only one "lead" for me to pursue, so if that lead does not work out well, I am back to square one. I expected that a full search would result in more than one recommendation for me to follow up on. You mentioned that you searched "local dance message boards". I have never used an Intent message board, but perhaps if I posted an inquiry I would eventually receive a response from a qualified instructor. I don't know what solutions full search would uncover, but I am left feeling that there are other promising solutions to my issue out there that have eluded your investigation of this topic.
I normally have been very happy with Google Answers work product. I'm sorry I can't be more enthusiastic about your research.

  • Wonderful! Here is the individual I MOST hoped to hear from, though I thought it was a longshot, considering her schedule in the near future. Her name is Lynn Hinkley Martinez, who since 1988, has been the event director for the Las Vegas Country Western Dance Finale, which is happening this year from December 14-17. She is the best of the best. According to the Country Western United Dance Council, it was Lynn who "put the Las Vegas dance fiesta on the map in 1988." I had posted several requests for her on message boards, hoping that someone who knows her might actually point me in the right direction. Just a few minutes ago, a gentleman with dancegig.com wrote me with her cell number. I contacted her, and she agreed to teach you to two-step at Gilley's for $100 per hour.

As more come in, I will continue to post. I agree, SL-7 ... in a city of more than one million individuals, many of whom are somehow connected to the entertainment industry, one would think the answer to such a query would be commonplace. I assure you, that has not been the case. It HAS been very challenging to find a match for your specifications, and I truly hope that you are beginning to feel more satisfied with three leads, all of whom meet your requisites precisely.

  • Good Morning, SL-7!

I woke up this morning to find another lead in my e-mail. I had spoken with her earlier, but was not able to get any details, as she was on another call. Unfortunately, their normal rate for private lessons at the site of your choice is $200 per hour, but she said that she may be able to accommodate you, depending on your desired dates, times, the teachers' schedules, etc. Therefore, I thought this would also be worth mentioning, at least. She is from Dance Charisma and her name is Nancy. The phone number at Dance Charisma is 702.364.8700.
You may think this is silly, but I just wanted to let you know that I have also sent several messages to individuals on myspace within a 50-mil radius of the Las Vegas area. I specified my search with "country," "dance" and "two step" and just let them know what I was doing. Usually, by someone's homepage, you can gain a lot of insight into their interests (hence the backlash against it by certain groups), so I went through and looked at pics, read descriptions and sent some messages to people I thought might be able to teach you well. I will let you know the moment any of this pans out!
Regarding the rating that has already been assigned, thank you so much for communicating with me further on this matter. As you know, there really is no other way for prospepective askers to gauge the quality of a researcher's abilities, so I appreciate that you recognize the star system's worth to the Google Answers researcher. However, I have reviewed our policies and FAQs and do not find an instance in which an asker is able to rescind a rating. Therefore, if only out of curiosity, I have sent a message to the editors inquiring. Please do not feel that you should take any further action. I sincerely apologize to you that my intitial answer contained but one lead. I am not sure if you are aware, but we are only able to lock questions for a limited amount of time, and often, we are only able to include as much information in that original answer was could be procured in that timeframe. For this reason, we are all very willing to continue the conversation with the asker by way of clarifications. My only hope is that you are satisfied, though that is not to say that my work here is yet done ...
I hope all is well for you, and I thank you for this communication.

  • Hello There!

Thanks for asking! I can provide you with this information, but would like a few details so that I may ensure the answer with which I provide you is beyond satisfactory. On what date would you like these dance lessons at Gilleys in the Frontier Casino to commence?
Once I have located, how will you proceed to book the individual? Should I tell her to expect to be interviewed or auditioned by you?
Great question! I love this type of niche headhunting! :)

    Thank you again!
    Aliciadenney-ga

  • Hello, hello, and thank you for choosing Google Answers!

I requested a clarification for this question, but realized that it was not necessary once I was actually able to find what you are looking for. My search strategy initially entailed contacting an individual at rockincountrydjs.com after my research initially only seemed to return his organization as one that specializes in the Country Western dance scene in the Las Vegas area. He informed me that, while his business specializes in event lessons, such as at weddings, he was, in the past, in contact with two individuals who specifically taught at Gilley's that would most likely be willing to contact you on a freelance basis.
He said that I was going to have difficulty finding someone to actually go on-site for $100 per hour. However, I didn't hear back from this gentleman so continued on my quest in the meantime. While there are many dance instructors in the Las Vegas area, it seems that the predominant form of dance taught there is ballroom. I called these every professional dance association I could find hoping to locate someone to offer this service on a freelance basis, but no luck. I then turned to Arthur Murray, thinking that there might be a slight chance that they would know someone. They do, in fact, offer this on-site service, but for $150. Since this did not fit your prerequisite, I continued.
I found your answer by searching through local dance messageboards, community boards and then, finally, lasvegas.craigslist.org, where I came across Amore Dance Studios, with two locations in Las Vegas, though not a chain, which I, for one, think is a great thing. I spoke with the owner, Matthew Dercole, who agreed to provide one on-site (Frontier Casino, at Gilley's) female dance instructor specializing in the two step for $100 per hour, on, of course, a strictly professional basis. He said that she will be able to meet you at Gilley's at the time of your choice, and can come from either location, since both are approximately equidistant from Frontier Casino. Here is the contact information:
    702-501-0973
The owner's name, as previously stated, is Matthew Dercole. His e-mail address is matthewdercole@cox.net
    The Web site: www.amoredancestudios.com

I am so excited to have located this for you! I ensured that the services provided by Amore Dance Studios have met all of your prerequisites through a fairly lengthy interview via phone. if for any reason this changes, this means that the information originally given to me was errant, but I really doubt this will be the case! Matthew was a very nice guy!
If you require me to expound on any of the information provided to your in this answer, please do let me know and I will be more than happy to be of assistance. Dancing is very much a passion for me, as well and I am glad to help a fellow afficionado pursue his dream of becoming an expert rug-cutter!
Thank you for choosing Google Answers. Have a wonderful day!

  • Greetings Sl7-ga,

Nice attitude! Researchers care about their stars.

Once a question had been rated, that cannot be changed. What some people do is post a new question with "For Aliciadenney-ga" in the subject box and either restate the question - if they want more help - or ask any kind of simple question, just so they can rate it and let the Researcher earn the price. Since the Researcher gets 75% of the price, but 100% of the tip, the latter is of more interest.
    Regards, Myoarin

  • Hello again, SL-7:

A man who frequently dances at Gilley's responded to a message board message I recently posted regarding your query. Here is what he stated:
"I'm a Gilley's regular who used to teach in country bars in Los Angeles. I learned from top professional competitors and am constantly told by locals that I'm their favorite two step partner. I can teach anyone who has a minimal amount of rhythm and coordination, but being that I'm also male we would need a female to be his partner. Obviously the better the female the faster the learning curve, but if he has a friend who wants to learn too then we can kill two birds with one stone. If that's do-able then call me and we can work things out."
I just spoke with him on the phone and he said that you would surely be able to find a female partner who would also like to learn, and he would instruct.
While I understand this doesn't fit directly in the parameters of your request, I am also a believer in exploring as many options as possible, so, here's yet another one.
Let me know what you would like to do with this guy. He asked that I not post his phone number on Google Answers. As it is against our policy to list individuals' contact information without their consent, I have of course, refrained from doing so. I am sure we can make this work if you are interested in what he is willing to offer.
    Thanks again.

  • PS: Feel free to contact Arthur Murray to verify this information. Obviously and logically, they are not going to freelance out their instructors, as they would never see the revenue! $150 was, in fact, the rate quoted to me to send an Arthur Murray dance instructor TO Gilley's.
    Thanks for choosing Google Answers.

  • Hello, again!

I just wanted to point you to the individual who confirmed two times for me that the cost of a private dance instructor is, indeed, $150. His name is Adam, he is at the East location. Phone number: (702) 798-4552
    Thanks!

  • Hello, again, SL-7!

Here is another lead that just contacted me:

    Karina
    702.434.6028
    dancewithkarina@yahoo.com

FWIW, I have MANY more requests out there for you, I just wanted to INITIATE our interaction in as timely a manner as possible.

Thanks, again, for choosing Google Answers.

  • Hello, SL7!

I would like to point out that your request for research indicated your desire for a match to your prerequisite list of qualifications. Typically, in the scope of my answer, I would, indeed, seek out much more information on any given topic, but, frankly, your request was so cut-and-dry, I really wasn't sure what other information I could provide you. Prior to your response to my research, I had two conversations with individuals on the West Coast who I had located in these stated unorthodox methods, however, BOTH inviduals stated to me that your request was extremely niche, and that I would be lucky to find one expert two-stepper to meet you at Gilleys. Both of the women I had spoken with said that they lived in California, but would be willing to meet you to teach you the two-step, but said that private dance lessons cost more than $100 per hour, especially on-site. I was going to also provide you with this information, but since it didn't fit your qualifications, I decided against.
Also, as a frequent Google Answers user, do you realize that rating someone's research typically takes place AFTER any necessary requests for clarification? I would have been MORE than willing to continue working on this for you. In fact, I had been planning to do so. You know what? Despite your rating haste, after which most researchers would cosnider their work as done, I shall continue to post information here for you, as I am able to locate. The lady with whom I had spoken last night said that she had several friends in the Las Vegas area that are avid Country Western dancers, and she would be more than happy to send them my way. When that information is provided to me, I will most certainly post it here for you. Pity that you have already closed this, as I am not able to contact you on a personal basis, and I don't know how long this question will remain up once a rating has been assigned.
