Please dig the dirt on the Canon FS-4000 Slide Scanner Best answer on the web

  • I am in the market for a Slide Scanner, as I have a mountain of 35 mm
Slides and Negs (Monochrome & Colour) that I would like to digitise.
APS would be a bonus but is not essential.

My eyes have alighted on the Canon FS-4000 but I would also consider
the nearest equivalents from Nikon and Minolta.

I am aware that its FARE does not recognize Black and White or
Kodachrome film and I prefer USB to SCSI.

I am strictly an amateur and, although my budget is flexible, I would not
want to go beyond the Canon price level unless I became REALLY convinced.

I use WIN98SE on my Desktop and WIN2000PRO on my Notepad.

OK, so what do you think?

    Many thanks.

    Bryan

  • Hello Bryan:

"I am aware that its FARE does not recognize Black and White or Kodachrome film..."

Just wanted to confirm that this means you are willing to accept not having hardware-based automatic error correction of scanned images?
    Thanks,

  • Hi, Omni

    many thanks for the Links.

No, I haven't tried them but I will.

Here in the UK, it's a Holiday Weekend, so I've just been mooneying around. You know how it is?
    Best Wishes

    Bryan

  • Hi, Again, Feilong

All my favourite researchers are popping up with helpful suggestions.

I'll take a look at your Link, maybe tomorrow.

The weather here is glorious and I am going to spend the rest of the evening outside on the patio, while my team of wine waiters keeps me sustained with the sparkling liquid. (And I don't mean Bromo-Seltzers ... they'll come later.)
    All the Best

  • Hi, Again, Aht

Many thanks for picking up on this one!

The limitation of Canon's FARE could be a factor that might influence me to go elsewhere but at what cost?
And would the alternative be otherwise comparable? Or better? Or possibly worse in some other respect?
This is where I need YOU to guide me.

I know that I am in very good hands!

    All the Best

    Bryan

  • You can find other good slide scanners through this link:

Although there are no ratings yet, you can click on each product for more info. You might find a cheaper alternative with the same or better specs.

  • Bryan --

Have you tried searching for the term "slide scanner" at the following 2 sites? Both have customer reviews on a variety of units: www.eopinions.com
www.amazon.com (you may wish to search in the Camera & Photo category)

    Best regards,

  • Hi, Everybody

Many thanks for the great comments, etc.

I've now got everything that I need!

I would have liked to have invited one of you to post an answer but each of you has contributed.
Instead, I am going to invite Omni to fly across to Canada and pick up Aht; then across to the UK to pick up me; and together we shall all fly to the Philippines where we pick up Madame Marcos for a jolly few days, eating every Banana Herat that we can find.
Sorry, Feilong, but Omni's plane is only a 4-seater.

    Maybe next time?

    Warmest regards

    Bryan
