"PC" after a Lawyer's name Best answer on the web

  • What is the meaning of the abreviation "PC" after a lawyer's name as
    in John Jones, PC ?

  • Thanks, Supermac, but the customer didn't indicate a British context. Even within Canada, there are probably far more Professional Corporations than Privy Councillors. And if the lawyer is in the United States, there is no chance at all that the "PC" stands for "privy councillor."

  • Depending on the context, PC can also stand for "Privy Councillor", which is particularly significant in Canada (or possibly Britain).
Prime Ministers, members of the Cabinet, and other important figures in Parliament are lifetime members of the Privy Council; as such, they have the letters "PC" appended to their name. Privy Councillors also have the title "Honourable". (Prime Ministers have more - they are referred to as the "Right Honourable".)
i.e. the Honourable Carolyn Bennett, PC
i.e. the Right Honourable Paul Martin

    See:
"FAQ10. What does the "P.C." stand for in the firm's name "Daniel S. Willard, P.C."? The P.C. stands for "professional corporation". A professional corporation is a special type of Maryland corporation that provides lawyers and other professionals such as doctors and accountants the benefits of legal limitation of liability while meeting the ethical requirements of professional responsibility." "Professional corporations. The corporate form can also be used for professional service providers. The main advantage of incorporating is that professionals in the corporation are not liable for the malpractice of others in the corporation, but they still remain liable for their own individual acts. Incorporating a professional corporation is essentially the same as incorporating any other corporation. A professional corporation however, must identify itself as such by including the following in its name: P.C., P.A., chartered, or incorporated." Source: Business Owner?s Toolkit: Corporations
